rock climbing

Within the 63,000 acres of New River Gorge National River are over 1,400 established rock climbs. "The New" has become one of the most popular climbing areas in the country. The cliffs at New River Gorge are made up of a very hard sandstone, and range from 30 to 120 feet in height. The rock is very featured, and an abundance of crack and face routes are available. Most of the routes in the gorge favor the advanced and expert climber. The majority of routes are 5.9 and harder, and most sport routes fall in the 5.10 - 5.12 range. A guidebook is an essential tool for locating climbs, and local climbing shops can offer information and specific recommendations.

Exhibition Coal Mine

At the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine, visitors ride through the dark passages of a vintage coal mine. The guides are veteran miners and provide firsthand accounts of the daily responsibilities and travail of past and present day miners.

Guests board a comfortable coal mine “man trip” that holds approximately 35 people for the duration of the whole tour. As the trip begins, guides give general information about the Mine and the history of coal mining in our region. The Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine is a “drift mine” and the track goes 1500 feet up and around various mined out areas. Stops are made at these areas and the veteran guides give in-depth information on the mining methods and equipment seen. The underground tour last approximately 35 minutes. Visitors are asked to bring a jacket because the temperature is always 58 degrees inside the Mine.

river  rafting

It's one of the most popular trips for a reason: there simply isn't a better way to beat the heat than to climb into a raft and take off down a cool mountain river!

The Lower New River trip's intensity depends on the season, with this classic run hitting its stride around mid-June. You'll find big water in summer and fall with intermittent long, calm pools for swimming and floating. Fall brings explosive color to the New River Gorge, and Bridge Day adds one more odd element: base jumpers flipping into the blue sky above as you float under the 876' tall New River Gorge Bridge.

Caves & Caverns

Descend 120 feet below the Earth's surface into a vast wonderland of stalactites and stalagmites. Lost World Caverns, discovered in 1942, is a truly magical place for both young and old. It takes approximately 45 minutes to walk through. Self-guided tours allow you to take your time to explore the cavern at your own pace. Just remember to stay on the trail. A guide sheet is provided to tell you about the many different formations that make up this 1/2 mile loop. No matter what the temperature on the outside, the cave always remains a constant 52 degrees. A light jacket and good shoes are recommended.

Hatfields & McCoys ATV Trail

The Hatfield-McCoy Trail System gets its name from the region in southern West Virginia where much of the world famous Hatfield-McCoy Feuding took place and where several of the Hatfield-McCoy Trails are now located. The Buffalo Mountain, Bearwallow, and Rockhouse Trail Systems are located on or near historical sites such as Blair Mountain, Matewan, and the Hatfield Cemetary where battles, feuding, and funerals once took place. This area of the Appalachian Mountains have always been known for its rugged, mountainous terrain, rich natural resources, and its people who have endured here through the decades of our countries existance and continue to call this area home. When you come to ride at Hatfield-McCoy Trails you will experience some of the best ATV, UTV, and dirtbike trail riding in the world as well as some of the most wonderful hospitality you'll find anywhere! Come and see why some people call it West Virginia "Almost Heaven" and why our trail riders call it "Trails Heaven".

The Princeton Devil Rays play at Hunnicutt Field in Princeton, West Virginia and the Bluefield Blue Jays play at Bowen Field, in Bluefield, West Virginia.

A devastating fire destroyed Bowen Field in 1973. The office was the only building untouched by the flames. A new concrete stadium was promptly build, as it stands today. Renovations, under the direction of Bluefield Baseball Club President George McGonagle, have greatly enhanced the complex, with the addition of a tunnel building, which houses two batting cages and a weight room. Over $3 million have been spent on Bowen Field improvements since 1989.
